Assam Schokoladen Pfeffer gehört zur Sorte des Langen Pfeffers, den man auch unter seinem botanischen Namen Piper longum kennt. Da der Assam Schokoladen Pfeffer etwas kürzer ist, wird er auch Piper longum small (bzw. kleiner langer Pfeffer) genannt. Auch optisch erinnert er an den langen Pfeffer, er ist allerdings etwas kürzer – was ihn auch den Beinamen „kleiner langer Pfeffer“ einbringt.

Geschmacklich hat er eine angenehme Milde, die gegen Ende eine leicht betäubende Wirkung am Gaumen hat.
