Pepper was and is a common spice. Ground whole black or white grains can be used for practically any dish.

Good to know

The berries are initially green and turn red when ripe. Green, black, red and white pepper come from the same plant. The difference lies in the time of harvest and processing: The black, hot pepper comes from not yet fully ripe fruits. Immediately after picking, the grains are dried in the sun until they are wrinkled and black-brown on the outside.
